Used oil is used engine oil, collected during the oil change of your machine or vehicle.
Changing the oil in a vehicle serves to replace the engine oil to ensure better lubrication.
The oil collected during an oil change has a high environmental cost. As a result, the law of February 10, 2022 prohibits its release into the environment.
Regulations for used oil management
Used oil is extremely polluting. Even a tiny amount can have very serious consequences on the environment, especially marine life. Any contaminated water prevents oxygenation and therefore halts the development of fauna and flora for many years.
The law of February 10, 2022 on waste reduction and circular economy established an EPR (Extended Producer Responsibility) channel to ensure the management of used oils from mineral or synthetic, lubricating or industrial oils. The disposal of used oil into the environment is thus banned due to its highly polluting nature.
With the enforcement of decree no. 2021-1395 and the ministerial order of October 27, 2021, eco-organizations must collect used oils from sites that hold them (mechanics, waste collection centers, farmers, industrial facilities…) free of charge, with the aim of ensuring recycling operations.
Within these rules, used oil management is regulated. Key points include:
● Prohibition of mixing oils: since each used oil has different properties and characteristics, they must be collected separately for proper recycling.
● Traceability obligation: every person collecting the oil must fill out a removal form indicating the type and quantity of oil collected.
The benefits of recycling used oil
Used oil can be recycled if it hasn’t been mixed with other liquids.
When you collect used oil from your fleet or vehicles, it must be stored in an appropriate container. This container must be leak-proof and hermetically sealed. At Alorem, we offer the DechetBox Exel, which provides a simple, optimal and above all safe storage solution for your used oil.
Once your tank is full, you can either have the oil picked up or take it to a specialized company.
Recycling used oil is essential for environmental protection. In fact, if the oil hasn’t come into contact with another liquid, it can be refined again – that is, filtered to remove any present contaminants.
After filtration, the quality level is equivalent to that of new oil.
